June Chamber Board Meeting:

The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors was held at the Chamber office on Monday, June 9, 2003. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by the President, Naomi Barfield. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved. The Treasurer reported a balance of $2,948.24 as of May 31, 2003.

Committee Reports:

Ambassadors - Jean Brewer reported that we have three new Ambassadors - Susan Mauck, Sheila Barbuck & Patsy Hughes. With the addition of these Ambassadors, the office will now be open five days a week. A luncheon will be planned for sometime in July to welcome these new volunteers and to introduce them to the other Ambassadors.

Economic/Industrial Development - It was reported that a restaurant may be interested in relocating from Guntersville to Grant. Naomi Barfield will do additional research on this.

Events - Naomi Barfield stated that she had talked with Sherrie Wertz and that she is getting items together for ‘goodie bags’ for the upcoming golf tournament.

Historian - Jean Brewer reported that she had complied a scrapbook for the previous years and is currently working on the one for 2003. She encouraged anyone who had information to be included in this book to please forward it to her. It was also decided that Brenda Barnes would contact someone (possibly Hilda Page) about writing a history of the Chamber.

Student Chamber Association - Ann Barnes reported that shirts and name tags have been ordered for the new SCA members. A luncheon will be planned for all SCA members prior to the beginning of the 2003-2004 school year.

It was also suggested that we consider setting aside money for a scholarship for a deserving SCA Senior. This was tabled until the next meeting.

Short/Long Range Planning - No report

    Tourism -No report

Theme - The possibility of rock sidewalks was discussed. Jean Brewer will pursue this idea and check into the cost. These sidewalks would be installed after the work on the sewer system is complete.

    Membership - No report

Golf Tournament - Anyone interested is invited to our three remaining golf tournament meetings which will be held June 12, 19, and 26. These meetings will be held at the Chamber office beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Merchants Committee - Russ Hamilton will contact all member merchants about supporting our upcoming golf tournament. He will also get ideas from these merchants as to things the Chamber can do to promote their businesses and the Town in general.

    OLD BUSINESS

We still do not have a definite date on the Cavern Welcome Center Opening. The State is awaiting word from the Governor’s office as to the availability of the Governor for this opening.

Jerry Ann reported that she attended the legislative reception in Montgomery on Tuesday, May 13. She reported that it was very well attended and thanked all who participated. On a per capita basis, Grant probably had one of the largest delegations at this meeting.

It was announced that the office move has still not been finalized.

    NEW BUSINESS

    None

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:20 p.m.

President’s Paragraph - It has been a busy month for everyone. Summer is upon us and events for the coming months are being planned. The Chamber is promoting Grant by soliciting new businesses to locate to our fair town. Watch the newsletter in the months ahead for what we hope will be exciting news regarding these new businesses.

Events -

Director’s Corner - The golf tournament is shaping up to be one of our best. I want to thank all those who are working so hard to make this a success, especially Joe Powell. Thanks, also, to our new and "old" ambassadors. Because of their dedication, our office is now open five days a week. This is a major accomplishment for the Chamber! Thanks to all who worked so hard to accomplish this milestone.

Ambassadors - The Ambassadors will have a luncheon hosted by Jean Brewer at her home on Wednesday, July 2, at 11:30 a.m. If you would like to volunteer a few hours a month and are interested in becoming an Ambassador, please contact Finie Higgins (728-8880) or Jean Brewer (728-5368). We have some wonderful ladies working with us, but we can always use new faces.

Mark Your Calendars - Kennamer Trading Post will have their grand opening at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 5. They will also host a Freedom Festival on that date. All are invited to attend.

Calendar/Newsletter - Due to vacations (mine included), there will be no newsletter for August. The next newsletter will have the minutes of the July & August Board meetings and a full report on our golf outing. …..Jerry Ann
