March Chamber Board Meeting:

The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors was held at the Chamber office on Monday, March 10, 2003. The meeting was called to order by President Naomi Barfield. Minutes of the February meeting were approved. The Treasurer’s report was given and approved.

Committee Reports:

Ambassadors: Ambassadors have been calling members for information to go in the ad we plan to put in The Advertiser Gleam saluting our members. They only have 7 more to complete.

Economic/Industrial Development: Don Milligan gave a detailed report of a meeting about Huddle House. A study done by Huddle House found that Grant does not pass requirements for a franchise. Don plans to search for other potential candidates.

Golf Tournament: In Joe Powell’s absence, Jean Brewer reported that Joe would like to have the annual Golf Tournament on June 28, 2003. Of course, this will depend on the availability of the golf course.

Historian: Jean Brewer, Chairman, reported that she is still working on the book.

Merchants Coordinator: Chairman Russ Hamilton had nothing to report but was congratulated by the Board on winning the Humanitarian of the Year award.

Student Chamber Association: Chairman Ann Barnes reported that Angela Otts of The Advertiser Gleam had interviewed her about the SCA and will do an article about the organization in an upcoming issue. It was also decided that interviews will soon be held to fill the vacancies of the 8 seniors who will be graduating in May. Sophomores and Juniors will be eligible to apply.

Short/Long Range Planning: No Report. Naomi is going to ask Kelly Casey about the possibility of students from Auburn University assisting in the Long Range Plan.

Theme: Chairman Jean Brewer will set up a committee meeting after signs are put up.

Old Business: Signs should be in place soon. They are ready. The Board did an evaluation of the February Banquet to see if anything should be changed before next year. Due to the high cost ($138.00) of having tablecloths laundered, next year we will get paper tablecloths. No one has received any negative comments.

Naomi reported that Dr. Sparks had thanked the Chamber for the letters to the Hospital Board about the possibility of locating a Wellness Center in the area.

New Business: The Cathedral Caverns Welcome Center Opening is approaching. A special called meeting may be necessary as soon as a date is set.

Naomi asked the Board their opinion about possibly building a Kid-Zone behind the Grant Recreation Center. The liability insurance was noted as a stumbling block for the project, but Vicki Hall has information about a Kid-Zone and she will be contacted.

Changing the date and time of future board meetings was once again tabled. The next meeting will be April 14, 2003.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Jean Brewer and seconded by Chris Weeks to adjourn.
