Membership Renewals - Thanks to the following businesses & individuals for renewing their Chamber membership: Billie Ann Segler Video Shack Grant Animal Clinic Keystone Automotive Industries State Farm Insurance (Pierce Harris) March Chamber Board Meeting: The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors was held at the Chamber office on Monday, April 14, 2003. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by the President, Naomi Barfield. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved. The Treasurer reported a balance of $6,998.43 as of March 31, 2003. The check written to pay for the signs has not cleared and is not reflected in this amount. A budget report showing budget -vs- actual expenditures through the 1Q03 was reviewed. Committee Reports: Ambassadors, Short/Long Range Planning & Tourism - No Reports Economic/Industrial Development - Chairman Don Milligan reported that he didn’t have any new information, but that he was pursuing several leads. Brenda Barnes stated that there was a website which lists restaurants and businesses that are wanting to relocate to small towns. She will pursue this. Events - Chairman Sherrie Wertz reported that the Secretaries Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, April 23, at the Kennamer Cove Trading Post. It will be catered and she has obtained donated table decorations which will be given as door prizes. The date & location of the next Early Bird Coffee has not been determined, but will be set by the end of the week (note: see below). After discussion, it was decided that due to various reasons, the Spring Spectacular event should probably be postponed and held in 2004. Bobby Joe Rice, with a second by Jean Brewer, made a motion that we postpone this event until 2004. The motion carried. Golf Tournament - No report. The event has been set for Saturday, June 28, at Twin Lakes. Historian - Chairman Jean Brewer stated that she would bring the scrapbook to the Chamber office so it could be viewed by more people. She also said she would try to write up a history of the Chamber, focusing on the people who were instrumental in getting the Chamber started. Student Chamber Association - Chairman Ann Barnes reported that we have received 20 applications for the 2003-2004 SCA new members. Interviews will probably be held the week of April 21. We will need to replace the eight Seniors who will be graduating this year. Jerry Ann will participate in the Awards Day presentations at the School. She will present certificates to the outgoing SCA members. Theme - Chairman Jean Brewer reported that we would use the rock theme on one of our signs. It was agreed that if we could find someone to do this work, we would offer them a year’s free membership in the Chamber in exchange for doing the work free of charge. Membership - Chairman Naomi Barfield reported that membership renewals for the year have been good. Old Business – The final report on the banquet was given. It was agreed that this banquet was a success and that we would make this an annual event. Naomi Barfield reported that the signs are being erected. The sign near Honeycomb Creek that was vandalized with red paint will, hopefully, be repaired. The Honor Roll of Businesses Ad was published in The Advertiser Gleam. We still do not have a definite date on the Cavern Welcome Center Opening. New Business - Jerry Ann reported that Marshall County will host a legislative reception in Montgomery on Tuesday, May 13, from 5-7 p.m. All of the chambers and cities within Marshall County will be represented at this reception. She encouraged anyone who could attend to please do so. Contact either her or the Marshall County Visitor’s Bureau for more information. Naomi Barfield stated that the Wellness Center looked like a "go" and that the parties connected with this venture had been talking with personnel in Grant regarding a possible location. Due to conflicts, the May Board Meeting will be moved to Monday, May 5, 2003, at 6:30 p.m. at the Chamber Office. There being no further business, Ann Barnes, with a second by Jean Brewer, made a motion that the meeting be adjourned. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m. President’s Paragraph - The 2nd Annual Administrative Professional’s Day Luncheon was a great success. Thanks to Sherrie Wertz and her Events Committee, Jilli’s for the Fashion Show, All American Catering for the delicious meal, and the Kennamer Cove Trading Post for providing the perfect setting. Thanks to all for pulling together and making everyone feel very special. If you missed this luncheon, you missed a fun time. Our next big event is our Golf Tournament on June 28 at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Arab. We need your support. Volunteers are needed to make this event even better than last year. Joe Powell is planning a top notch tournament and if you can help, please contact Joe.Grant Focus – This month’s Focus is on Jean Brewer, President of the Board of Directors during 2002. Jean is a Grant native who married her high school sweetheart, Don. She graduated from DAR. Don was in the Air Force and they have lived in Germany, Japan, Hawaii and various cities within the US. She retired in 1997 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Human Resources. She and Don have three children: Jennifer of Huntsville; Renee of Seattle, WA; and Roger of Grant. She says her three grandchildren - Christa, Chelsea & Chandler - are the highlight of her & Don’s lives. She and Don do volunteer work. They enjoy giving back to the community that they feel gave so much to them in their youth. Keep up the good work, Jean. Early Bird Coffees - Our Quarterly Early Bird Coffee will be held in May 9 in the Patriot Room at the First Bank of the South beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Better Business Bureau of North Alabama will be our host. Come learn more about what the BBB can do for you and your company. Upcoming Events - Director’s Corner - It’s summer again! The Chamber is very busy getting ready for upcoming events. I would like to ‘second’ Naomi’s thanks to all who helped to make our Secretaries Luncheon such a success. The Legislative Reception to be held May 13 in Montgomery will be a great opportunity to promote our town. All are invited. Of course, Joe Powell is hard at work on our upcoming golf tournament. Last year’s tournament was a huge success and I know this year’s event will be even better.
